Take a look at our dips that can be made ahead of time, work as great appetizers or munchies throughout the night and are even better when given some time to chill.
You don’t have to know the guests, we have a dip for each palette: Savor, Salty, Sweet or Spicy. Though most are cream cheese or sour cream based (always keep one of these in your fridge for surprise guests), there is also a healthy guacamole option which has been my most requested item by guests and hosts for years. Choose one or make a quad of dips – let these recipes work for you and your crowd.
#1 Savory: Classic Spinach Dip
Though a timeless classic, I’ve never been one to follow recipes exactly as written so there’s always a little twist that makes it special when it comes from me. Feel free to dash a bit more spice of scale back.
My secret to this dip: always use fresh baby spinach and bit of extra spice – it’s worth the flavor boost and extra effort.
Ingredients
1 lb fresh baby spinach, cooked, cooked and squeezed dry
16 oz (2 cups) Sour Cream
1 cup mayonnaise
1 package Knorr® Vegetable recipe mix
1 cup (8oz can) of chopped water chestnuts, drained
4 green onions, sliced thin (horizontally)
½ teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon onion flakes
Directions
Mix together ingredients and chill for about 2 hours. Serves a large crowd.
Note: To cook spinach – coarsely chop spinach into strips. Add to a pan with 2 Tbs of water. Steam down, cool and squeeze out excess water though a colander. If the spinach is cool enough to be squeezed, it can be used in the dip.
Best Dipping Pair: Ritz®Pita Chips in Regular or Mediterranean Flavor OR a thinly sliced fresh baguette. No carb option: Opt for fresh veggies.
#2 Salty: Cheese Crab Dip
This dish can be served hot or cold and can be doubled for a crowd larger than 10 people.
Ingredients
8 oz bar cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp Dijon Mustard
1 tbsp onion flakes
½ tbsp Old Bay Seasoning or seasoned salt
½ lemon, juiced
2 tsp minced garlic
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
16 oz jumbo crab meat or claw crabmeat, drained
Tabasco for taste
Directions
Mix together first 8 ingredients (electric mixer preferred). Fold in parsley and crabmeat. Sprinkle tabasco or leave on side for taste. Ready to serve!
Best Dipping Pair: Bagel Chips, Water Crackers or Ritz®Crackers
#3 Sweet: Hot Chocolate Dip
Nothing about this dip is hot except for the name, but it has hot cocoa and comfort written all over it. With melt in your mouth chocolate chips and mini marshmallows throughout, this is the perfect cold weather treat. The key to my dip is the type of brownie mix specified below– I’ve never gone wrong!
Ingredients
8 oz bar cream cheese, softened
1 box Ghirardelli®Double Chocolate Brownie Mix
8 oz Cool Whip®
4 oz Marshmallow Fluff
1 cup mini marshmallows, divided
Directions
Mix up all ingredients except for half of the mini marshmallows. Garnish with the mini marshmallows and a bit of leftover cool whip. Chill for at least an hour and take out 15 min before serving.
Pro Tip: This stays super well in the fridge for about 2 weeks, but make sure to take it out at least 15 min before serving.
THEME IDEA: Mold dip into a football shape and use mini marshmallows and whipped cream topping for football stripes. Line with whipped cream for a finishing touch.
Perfect Pairing; Nilla Wafers or Graham Crackers
#4 Spicy: Guacamole
Besides devilled eggs, this is the one appetizer that I never have enough of and I always get rave reviews about. There’s nothing like a classic guacamole with your own flair. Leftovers are always welcome for any meal as great topper for toast or on top of grilled salmon with a squirt of lime. Adjust spices as needed.
Ingredients
4 ripe Hass avocados
½ medium red onion, minced
½ large jalapeño, diced (very small)
2 limes, juiced
2 tsp minced garlic
½ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp salt
½ tsp white pepper
½ tsp cayenne pepper
3 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
3 campari tomoatoes, chopped
Chili powder (optional)
Directions
Mash up all ingredients except tomatoes (I use a potato masher to leave a bit of chunk to it). Taste and adjust spices as needed. Fold in tomatoes and chill. Top with extra cilantro and a sprinkle of chili powder before serving.
Pro Tip: Store in airtight container and gently pour a little water just to cover the top and avoid browning.
LEFTOVER LOVE:
Breakfast: Use leftovers for avocado toast. Drop a fried egg on there! Yum!
Lunch: With a side of tuna or as a spread on a turkey sandwich.
Dinner: Drop a dollop on your grilled salmon or as a side with grilled shrimp and yellow rice.
Perfect Pairing: Tostitos Dippers or Garlic Plantain Chips
